Research Animal Circus

The Circus Development Agency takes a neutral stance on the issue of circuses that include animals.

Of around 30 traditional, tented touring circuses in the UK around 4 include animals.

The more prolific, contemporary style of circus has more in common with dance and theatre than commercial entertainment involving animals.

Travelling Menageries

In addition, you might find it interesting to research the Travelling Menageries, which eventually turned into the static zoos we know today.

They appeared on fairgrounds, at a time when fairs, circuses and other novel displays would often be mingled - for instance, the early moving pictures.

The cross-over between allowing the public to view menageries at feeding time (when trainers would enter the cage) and later performances inside a circus tent seems very likely.
