YOUNG PEOPLE’S PARTICIPATORY THEATRE PROJECT (YPPT)

Project summary

The Young People's Participatory Theatre programme is a 3-year DCMS funded initiative to develop youth and participatory theatre in England 2005/06 - 2008/09.

We are working within the definition that, Youth and Participatory Theatre activity is the creative use of young people's time outside of formal education, usually but not exclusively facilitated by adults, giving young people an opportunity to express themselves creatively through theatre and develop personally and socially within a group.

The definition of theatre within the scope of this project includes circus, street arts and experimental theatre. The age range for young people within this project is 11 - 25.

Key aim:

For young people to engage with the highest quality of theatre experience through engaging with the work of professional artists, taking part in creative activity or as artists themselves.

Objectives:

The programmes aims are to:
· increase young people's access to and participation in theatre;
· raise the profile and status of participatory work;
· broaden the types of theatre based activity in which young people can participate eg technical, stage management, costume, administration etc
· positively address issues of quality;
· explore opportunities for young people's progression into the theatre industry;
· establish international links and share models of good practice.


The 3-year programme will include:
. The first complete mapping of youth and participatory theatre provision in England;
. A series of pilot projects exploring innovative ways of working with young people, the learning from which to be shared across the theatre industry and YPPT sector;
. Contribution to the development of national youth circus activities;
. ‘Open Doors’ – nationally co-ordinated events developed in partnership with the TMA, ITC and theatre industry, to enable young people to learn more about working in theatre;
. Information, advice and guidance about employment and career opportunities within theatre;
. A YPPT interactive website tool and resource
. An international conference to take place in Liverpool, Capital of Culture 2008
